Daily foot checks for diabetes

Diabetic Foot Care is a mobile app in which people with diabetes examine their feet on their own: they take photos, do simple tests and track healing progress. We designed the interface and built the app in Flutter and Laravel.

Challenge

Foot checks only make sense when they are regular, and patients do them on their own, at home.

Users vary in age and in how comfortable they are with a phone. So every check had to be explained in plain language, with an illustration and a single button to start, and the foot photo had to be taken correctly without help from another person.

We built the interface around readability: large buttons, short instructions, tips at every step, and Polish, English and German versions. Results go into a history and a report the patient can show their doctor.

From reminder to a report for the doctor

We wrapped the daily routine of checks into four steps.

Reminder
The patient chooses which checks to be reminded about and how often.

Guided check
Each test has a description, an illustration, a timer or foot selection, and a tip on what to look out for.

Foot photo
The camera guides the foot into the frame and takes the photo after a countdown once the position is right.

History and report
Photos and results form a timeline and a treatment progress report for the specialist.

Main and optional checks on one screen. Each one guides the patient with a simple description, an illustration and a timer.

The camera shows how to position the foot, and the photo is taken automatically once the foot is in the frame.

History and reports

Photos and results form a history, and the report summarizes healing progress for the doctor.
